Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

How much funding does Herefordshire Council receive from Central Government?

Answer:

Central Government Grant accounts for around two thirds of the funding of the Council’s net budget requirement (i.e. after fees and charges received and any specific Government grants). This consists of Revenue Support Grant and redistributed Business Rate Income.

The Revenue Support Grant is the main grant paid by Central Government to aid local authority services in general. Grant is fixed therefore if the Council spends 1% more than the Government’s assessed spending level council tax increases by approximately 3%.

In addition Central Government allocates specific grants, which may only be used for a designated purpose. The Council also receives grants and contributions from other bodies and also collects income from Sales, Fees and Charges e.g. Car Park charges, Library fees.
