Household composition

Download data.  As published in the 2009 State of Herefordshire Report.

The need for housing, to a certain extent, is dependent on the current types of households (composition).  For example if there are higher proportions of single person households there is more need for smaller dwellings in the county.

  • Herefordshire has a slightly higher proportion of lone pensioner households, 15% compared to the West Midlands and England (both 14%).  Comparatively Herefordshire has a slightly lower proportion of other single person households (13%) compared to regionally (15%) and nationally (16%).
  • Herefordshire has a higher proportion of pensioner couples (12%) than the West Midlands and England (both 9%)
  • Herefordshire also has a slightly lower proportion (5%) of lone parent households with dependent children than the West Midlands (7%) and England (6%).

The shaded cells in table 1 show higher proportions of that household type by type of location as discussed in the following points:

  • There is a higher proportion of lone pensioner households in rural towns than other areas in Herefordshire and proportions of pensioner couple households are higher in rural villages as well as rural towns.
  • The proportion of single person households is higher in urban areas, whilst proportions of married couple households without children are higher in rural villages and rural dispersed locations
  • The proportion of married couple households with dependent children is also higher in rural dispersed locations and rural villages, whilst the proportion of cohabiting couple households with dependent children is slightly higher in the urban areas and rural towns.
  • The proportion of lone parent households with dependent children is higher in urban areas and rural towns.
