Street Cleansing

Amey Herefordshire’s street cleansing team carries out a number of activities from mechanical sweeping, and litter picking to graffiti removal and recycling.

Our team empties over 1000 litter bins, and more than 300 dog bins throughout Herefordshire.  We aim to empty every bin before it is full.  Any reports of full bins are emptied within one working day.  12 tonnes of rubbish is cleared from Hereford city alone each week.

Over 80 miles of A & B roadside verges are litter picked each year. Items collected range from the usual crisp packets and drinks cans, to tyres and even a duck!

We utilise 3 HGV sweepers and 6 compact sweepers to sweep all of the adopted roads within Herefordshire.  Where access is limited or the mechanical sweeper is obstructed we will cleanse by hand for example: cul-de-sac ends or roads obstructed by parked cars.

Graffiti is removed from all council owned property within a set timescale using chemicals that have been designed for all types of surfaces – even historical monuments.

The Streetscene team removes illegally dumped rubbish from the public highway or Council owned land within 5 working days and animals within 24 hours.  Our supervisors work closely with Council Enforcement Officers to provide evidence so that the culprits can be prosecuted.

An unpleasant, but necessary part of the job is the removal of discarded needles, syringes and other drug related items.  These are carefully disposed of within 24 hours of being reported.

Our well-trained team works in all weathers, 365 days of the year to ensure that Herefordshire remains a county to be proud of.

To report litter, graffiti or full bins please call Streetscene on 01432 261800 or e-mail streets@herefordshire.gov.uk

Your Contribution

Occasionally, we may seek your co-operation in keeping a street or part of a street free of parked cars so that effective cleaning can be carried out. We will inform you when we need to do this.

Community Litter Picking

Amey Herefordshire is keen to support local communities who wish to perform voluntary litter picking activities. Amey can provide litter picks, gloves, hoops, black bags and high visibility jackets, on loan to those who would like to initiate a litter pick in their area. Amey will also collect the proceeds of the litter pick at a mutually convenient location.
