Herefordshire Council monitors pollution continuously at the Edgar Street Roundabout in Hereford for nitrogen oxides and for particulates(PM10). This is in a green roadside enclosure adjacent to the curve roofed market buildings.
Nitrogen dioxide is also measured by using diffusion tubes at over 50 sites countywide, giving us monthly and therefore annual means.
Sulphur dioxide is measured by a diffusion tube at a Hereford City centre site and ozone is measured by diffusion tubes at a Hereford City centre site and at a rural site in Wellington for comparison.
All this data can be found within the various reports which can be clicked on in the document box below.
Ozone and nitrous oxides are also monitored independently by the government at the Leominster Monitoring Station.
Herefordshire Council also regulates emissions to air from some industrial processes through the Local Authority Pollution Prevention Control regime. By issuing permits (licences) under this ‘PPC regime’ for these factories and processes, industrial air pollution can be controlled and minimised at source.
