Land pollution
The Service undertakes routine monitoring of landfill gas, leachate and ground water at closed landfill sites which are the responsibility of the Council. It also advises the Council on technical issues concerning the redevelopment of land which may have been contaminated from previous uses, and takes action where contaminated land gives rise to a statutory nuisance. Advice is also given on Radon gas and radiation issues.
Herefordshire Council has completed the Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy required by Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (inserted by section 57 of the Environment Act 1995)
Part IIA requires local authorities to prepare a strategy for the identification of contaminated land. The strategy outlines a five-year programme for the identification, inspection and remediation of contaminated land.
