Carbon Footprinting
carbon footprinting on myherefordshire.com Herefordshire Council has been busy working with Defra, D:Gen and a number of other key organisations on a major new project to raise the profile of climate change. We are using AMEE (the Avoiding Mass Extinction Engine) to run a carbon footprint calculator for the county.

This is now available through the county portal http://www.myherefordshire.com/

Climate Change

'Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face today. The first step towards tackling the problem is to make sure everyone understands exactly what the challenge is and the difference they could make'. ( DirectGov Climate Change)

The Carbon Management Plan (CMAP) was developed in 2005 with the assistance of the Carbon Trust and consultants from Energy for Sustainable Development (EST). Its purpose is to define the steps that Herefordshire Council will take to secure its contribution to the carbon dioxide reduction targets as part of the Herefordshire Partnership Climate Change Strategy.

The CMAP sets a target for Herefordshire Council to achieve a 12.5% reduction in the 2002 carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from the activities directly controlled by the council or upon which it has an influence, by 2012, and to deliver a commitment to securing a 20% reduction by 2020.

Herefordshire Council is a partner within the Herefordshire Partnership. In June 2006, Herefordshire Council signed Herefordshire's Climate Change Strategy '2020 Vision'. The vision is:

'To place Herefordshire at the forefront of climate change understanding and initiatives within the United Kingdom and to ensure we make our contribution towards tackling this global problem in a coherent, appropriate and beneficial way for Herefordshire'.

Through the Climate Change Action Plan the Herefordshire Partnership hopes to raise awareness and understanding through various channels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the UK's Energy White Paper.

See Herefordshire's 'Take action on climate change' booklet to find out more about quick and easy ways to making a difference against climate change and how to obtain grants for energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.

Herefordshire Council is currently developing a carbon footprint calculator, soon to be launched through the county portal, myherefordshire.com. This will allow you to calculate your carbon emissions and compare these to the averages for your parish, your county and your country.
