The Smoke Free Herefordshire group, established in early 2006 in anticipation of the proposed changes, and with representatives from the council, the primary care trust, Hereford and Worcester Fire Service, local businesses, the voluntary and community sector and HM Revenues and Customs, has been preparing for the new legislation for some time. This new law, which aims to prevent ill health caused by second hand smoke, will have the biggest health impact since the 1956 Clean Air Act. It follows major consultation nationally and locally.
Under the law everyone will have the right to work and socialise in a smoke free environment. Smokers will have to smoke outside unless they are in a private home or private vehicle. There are very few exemptions.

Smoke free England will affect everyone, but have a big impact on business. The Smoke Free Herefordshire Partnership organised events for businesses to explain the reasoning behind the legislation, the regulations and enforcement of them, and dealing with the issues that may occur subsequent to the legislation, such as littering. The Partnership also took the Smoke Free Herefordshire Road Show to the public, visiting the market towns and Hereford city.
