Smokefree Herefordshire

England went smoke free on Sunday 1 July 2007.

The Smoke Free Herefordshire group, established in early 2006 in anticipation of the proposed changes, and with representatives from the council, the primary care trust, Hereford and Worcester Fire Service, local businesses, the voluntary and community sector and HM Revenues and Customs, has been preparing for the new legislation for some time. This new law, which aims to prevent ill health caused by second hand smoke, will have the biggest health impact since the 1956 Clean Air Act. It follows major consultation nationally and locally.

Under the law everyone will have the right to work and socialise in a smoke free environment. Smokers will have to smoke outside unless they are in a private home or private vehicle. There are very few exemptions.

The introduction of smoke free environments will:

  • reduce the risks to health from exposure to secondhand smoke
  • recognise a person's right to be protected from harm and enjoy smoke free air
  • increase the benefits of smoke free enclosed public places and workplaces for people trying to give up smoking
  • save thousands of lives over the next decade by reducing both exposure to hazardous second hand smoke and overall smoking rates

Smoke Free Herefordshire and Businesses

Smoke free England will affect everyone, but have a big impact on business. The Smoke Free Herefordshire Partnership organised events for businesses to explain the reasoning behind the legislation, the regulations and enforcement of them, and dealing with the issues that may occur subsequent to the legislation, such as littering. The Partnership also took the Smoke Free Herefordshire Road Show to the public, visiting the market towns and Hereford city.

Materials promoting the new law are still available - see resources below.

Giving up smoking

Whilst the law has been introduced to protect people from second hand smoke, many smokers are using the change as a reason to try to quit.
