Safari So Good - Wild Animals move into towns

The introduction of the 'Lay-by Safari' anti-litter signs in 20 of the worst lay-bys across the County has proved so successful that the animals (plus some new ones) are being used again to help promote 'Streetscene'.

Streetscene began with the introduction of the Graffiti Hotline (01432 261800) in November 2003. The 'hotline' is operated by Herefordshire Council's Environmental Directorate Highways & Transportation Division working in Partnership with Herefordshire Jarvis Services (HJS). The hotline operates between 8.30am - 5.00pm and there is an answer phone for out of hours reporting. Since then the line has become the Streetscene Hotline so use it to report all environmental concerns, dog-fouling etc., excess litter, potholes, damaged signs, discarded 'sharps' (needles/syringes/broken glass).

In 2004 Streetscene grew in other ways too, including the refurbishment of public conveniences and more focussed street cleaning and litter patrols.

Now Streetscene is moving into its next phase, which combines environmental actions with awareness raising/educational campaigns and lots of promotional publicity - hence the animals popping up everywhere!

The 'safari gang' of animals will be seen out and about around the County on vans and lorries and where street works are taking place. Individual members of the gang will be introduced over the next few months as Streetscene focuses on different issues. Look out for Lenny ' the litter' Lion; Gemma 'the graffiti' Giraffe; Claude 'the chewing gum' Cheetah plus many more stalking into our local places.
