14-19 Education and Skills
The government has set a challenging agenda to enable all young people to be able to access a Learning Entitlement. The objectives of the reform are:
- A high quality and valued learning route for every young person that enables them to participate, achieve and progress
- The right support so that they can access and make the most of their choice
- Strengthening the partnerships that will deliver excellent learning and support for all young people
- Establishing the delivery system at local, regional and national to ensure excellent learning and support for all young people
Local Authorities are the strategic lead on 14-19 and work in partnership with key stakeholders who form the 14-19 Consortium.
Key activities
- Curriculum development is a major feature of the 14-19 Strategy. Schools and colleges are introducing vocational and applied learning choices such as BTECs and the new diplomas. There is a specific project for 14-16 year olds called Live and Learn.
- Funding for 16-19 year olds in colleges and school sixth forms, which the Learning and Skills Council currently manage will soon be managed by the Local Authority which will enable a more joined up offer for young people. Apprenticeships will be developed and increased.
- The provision of information, advice and guidance for all young people is crucial for their success and achievement; and is currently delivered on our behalf by Connexions Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
