New Exhibitor Award

Jetty Series Three (Group Picture)

I am a recent graduate of Hereford College of Art (Hopefully!) having just completed a BA Hons in Contemporary Applied Arts. Previously to this, I attended an Access to Art course at Malvern college.

Since as far as I can recall, glass has always had an alluring presence for me. Initially manifesting itself, though my previous work in stained glass and more recently I have discovered the delights of kiln formed glass.

My main inspiration has been drawn from the structures I have encountered whilst walking along the Severn Estuary. I admire the interaction between the fluidity of the water and the angular lines of these structures. Also the subdued colour tone of the surrounding areas creates a tranquil atmosphere.

I have used strip cut glass and crucible melting techniques that reflect the angularity of the jetty structures while the crucible melting process echoes the fluidity of the water.

Within this body of work I have endeavoured to capture these strong and soft elements through the creation of glass vessels while also using the subdued colour pallet of the estuary.

Glass by its very nature is unforgiving but it still holds a fascination for me. I’ve learned that it can’t be forced into doing anything it doesn’t want to, it has to be coaxed gently and even then it still is defiant, breaking at the least provocation. It has the ability to alter the depth and tone of colour, which for me, links to my delight of drawing and the richness of tone which can be achieved with a single colour.
