Hfd shortlisted for sustainable transport cash

Hereford is one of seven English towns in the running for a share of £7.5 million for development of sustainable transport.

The seven shortlisted towns were selected from a pool of 50 and if Hereford’s sustainable transport scheme makes the final cut it will share in the multi-million pound pot of cash with the other winning town.

As well as receiving Government cash to develop its schemes the two winning towns will act as showcases for other towns wishing to promote greater travel choice.

The Council must now submit a more detailed plan to show how the project could help to reduce pollution and congestion in Hereford by encouraging walking, cycling and the use of public transport.

If Hereford were selected, the project would complement the range of improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport that are being introduced with funding from the Council’s Local Transport Plan.

In addition to being shortlisted for this initiative, the Council’s Local Transport Plan was awarded top marks and a significant increase in funding by the Government last week.

Cllr Mike Wilson, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation), said: “Hereford has done very well to make the final seven from a strong field of 50 towns and it’s testament to the hard work of everyone who put together this outline scheme.

“Reducing congestion in Hereford is a priority and we are continually working on schemes that encourage or enable people to leave their cars at home.

“Environmentally friendly modes of transport reduce congestion and pollution for the benefit of the whole community.

“Our staff will now be working hard over the New Year to formulate detailed plans which will then be submitted to the Department for Transport .

“I believe Hereford would be an ideal place in which to showcase sustainable transport and such a project would be a major boost to the City. ”

The shortlisted towns along with Hereford are Halifax, Darlington, Peterborough, Worcester, Wolverhampton and Weston-Super-Mare.

A final announcement on the two successful towns is expected by April 2004.
