Herefordshire Council maintain good performance

Herefordshire Council has maintained its position among the top performing Local Authorities in the UK, the latest report from a national watchdog claims.

The report from the Audit Commission, published this week, rates Herefordshire Council as a “good” performer scoring three out of a possible four for the way it is run.

The Council continues to strive for excellent status and would have been eligible for re-assessment but for its score in the environment area.

Overall service performance is maintained at three out of four and the report adds: “based on Herefordshire’s current plans, the Council is well placed to improve the way it works and the services it provides to local people.”

Housing benefit services have improved in the past year and educational performance remains good.

Provisional results for 11-14 year olds are in the top 25% and GCSE results have continued to improve with 56% of pupils receiving five or more GCSE’s at grade A* to C.

Social Care continues to receive a two-star rating and the Joint Review of social services says there are promising prospects for further improvement.

Cllr Roger Phillips, Herefordshire Council Leader, said: “Overall this a very satisfying result. Their comment that we are well placed to improve the way we work is particularly encouraging.

“The improvements we have seen in Social Care Benefits and the use of resources are particularly pleasing but we are not complacent.

“Environment, in particular waste management, was identified as an area with potential for improvement.

“Diverting waste from landfill is an area we are working hard to improve and part of our strategy includes the development of a municipal waste management strategy.”

The Audit Commission issued Herefordshire Council with a “Good” Authority rating in 2002 after a rigorous assessment.

The first annual update was released by the Commission on Thursday, December 18, 2003, and Herefordshire maintains its “Good” rating for 2003.
