Residents in Hereford’s St Nicholas Ward will be asked to “make a note to post their vote” early next year in the second postal ballot to be held in Herefordshire.
Following the resounding success of a postal ballot in this year’s local election held in May – in which nearly 60 per cent of people voted – Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has granted Herefordshire Council permission to run the forthcoming by-election in the same manner.
The by-election has been called following the recent sad death of Cllr Rev David Short, MBE. It leaves a seat free in the St Nicholas Ward on both Herefordshire Council and the Parish of Hereford City Council.
Both these seats will be voted for during the by-election.
It means around 5,000 ballot papers will be dropping through electors’ letterboxes from January 9. These ballot papers will have to be completed and posted back by Monday, January 19, to ensure they arrive in time to be counted.
“This is clearly an endorsement of the magnificent response rate in May’s elections this year,”
said Mr Neil Pringle, Returning Officer for the by-election.
“The Electoral Commission has looked at the way the election was run and backed our bid to run this by-election in the same way.
“As a result there won’t be any polling stations or ballot boxes – and what it does mean is that, once again, people will be able to cast their vote from the comfort of their own home, at a time which suits them, and simply pop their completed ballot paper in the post,” added Neil.
As with the previous postal ballot, instructions on how to vote will be included with the ballot papers.
Anyone who forgets to pop their completed ballot paper in the post by January 19 will be able to drop them off at Hereford Town, in St Owen Street, up until 5pm on Thursday, January 22.
