The Aylestone Park Association needs your help to plant trees at the site of the new Aylestone Park on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December as part of Hereford’s planting during National Tree Week.
This ‘Community Tree Planting’ weekend has been organised by the Herefordshire Council Parks, Countryside & Leisure Development Service in partnership with the Aylestone Park Association to enable you to get involved in the development of Hereford’s newest public open space.
The Aylestone Park Association, who are a group of local residents and others with a special interest in the new park, were recently awarded a ‘Living Spaces’ grant of £100,000.00 and your time as a volunteer will help them to raise the match funding for the project to make the £100,000 worth £200,000.
David Penny, Chairman of the Aylestone Park Association, said: ”We would be delighted for as many volunteers as possible so that the whole community will be working together to help establish the new park. We want people to get that feeling of ‘ownership’ for what will be an excellent recreational facility for the City.”
“Come down and plant a tree or help plant a shrubbery and then over the next few years you will be able to watch it grow and mature and in the future you will be able to tell your children or grandchildren that you helped in developing the park.”
If you would like to be involved in this ambitious project then please telephone Fran White on 01568 798320 or e-mail to fawhite@herefordshire.gov.uk for more details.
Other work planned for the site includes the restoration of the stretch of canal, this will involve dredging, vegetation clearance and wildlife habitat creation so that the canal not only becomes an important wildlife resource, but will eventually be navigable.
The Canal Trust volunteer ‘Saturday team’ will also be on site on Saturday 6th December working in the canal corridor generally tidying the area up and locating gas mains etc. The Saturday Team will be on site every Saturday from the New Year and they are also looking for more volunteers so if you would like to join in with the works to restore the canal why not pop down and meet the team this weekend?
