Long Serving Carer Retires

Herefordshire Home Care Assistant Muriel Harris has finally hung up her uniform for the last time.

During the last 30 years, Muriel, who lives near Bromyard, has carried out more than 50,000 visits to the frail and elderly in their own homes to help them with just about any household task.

This has ranged from personal care, collecting prescriptions, cooking meals, laundry, shopping, general housework, providing a sympathetic ear and even taking the dog for a walk.

On many occasions Muriel has even taken Christmas dinners round to the people she's been caring for.

"But I've no complaints - it's been a wonderful job," said Muriel at a special presentation ceremony to mark her retirement.

"I've met so many really nice people over the years and rather than them just being clients, they've become really good friends - which is what you'd expect when you visit them once, sometimes twice a day, for many years," she added.

She even used to carry an axe in the back of her car. "Very often I'd end up chopping up wood for their fires," she said.

Now Muriel is looking forward to putting her feet up for a well-earned rest and will enjoy not having to get up at 6.30am every morning.

"I'm really looking forward to retiring. I've got lots of craft things I want to do. While I'll miss all the people I've got to know, I'll keep in touch with them and will still contact some of the people I'm looking after," added Muriel.

At the special ceremony Muriel was presented with some porcelain figurines and a bouquet of flowers from her colleagues.

Muriel will be known to many people - particularly around the Bromyard area where she has worked for the past 30 years.
