Tree work for Etnam Street car park, Leominster

Herefordshire Council wishes to inform users of Etnam Street Car Park in Leominster that two Thuja trees will be removed from the rear of the site on Sunday 29th February.

The work will be undertaken by specialist tree surgeons J.A. Fisher Tree Surgery and is expected to cause minor inconvenience to users of the car park and Grange Walk, although the car park and footpath will remain open.

The trees, which are approximately 50 years old and in close proximity to a wall, are very fast growing and have completely out-grown the location in which they were planted. They are now causing severe damage to the walled garden, an important feature within the local conservation area.

The damage to the wall is a risk to the safety of users of Etnam Street Car Park and pedestrians using nearby Grange Walk, so the trees must be removed and the wall will be re-built.

A Yew tree near to the Thuja on Grange Walk will be reduced in size to improve its shape and to prevent branches from interfering with users of the footpath.

Colin Meneaud, Acting Parks Manager said: “We are glad to be able to retain the Yew tree in this situation. Yew is a much slower growing and more appropriate specimen tree for the location. Where possible we always look at a way of retaining mature trees, but in this case the Thujas are not good enough specimens and were originally planted in an inappropriate place.”
