Holocaust Memorial Day is a government initiative established in January 2000 with the first UK event taking place January, 27 2001.
January 27 was chosen as the date for Holocaust Memorial Day as it marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Holocaust Memorial Day is about both past and present. It’s about commemorating and continuing to learn from the events of the Holocaust and relating those events to the world today.
Each year a different theme is chosen for Holocaust Memorial Day. Each theme provides a different focal point on the holocaust, allowing different aspects to be explored and look at the implications these have today.
The chosen theme for 2004 is ‘From the Holocaust to Rwanda, lessons learned, lessons still to learn’. 2004 marks the tenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide so is a fitting theme.
“Holocaust Memorial Day provides us with an opportunity to remember the victims of the Nazi persecution and ensure that valuable lessons are learnt from those horrendous crimes,”
said Neville Meredith, Race Equality Officer.
“We’re delighted that Jeremy Bowen is delivering the lecture, he’s reported from Rwanda so will have first hand experience of the atrocities that took place and will be able to give a useful insight into the lessons still to be learned,” he added.
