Lifelong Learning Conference

A national conference focussing on Lifelong Learning in rural areas is to be held at the Three Counties Hotel, Belmont Road, Hereford, on Friday, February 27.

Lifelong Learning is particularly aimed at those over 16 who have left mainstream education.

It can include young people seeking vocational qualifications after a gap in their learning, employees engaged on learning at work, or older adults learning for personal development or for coping with career change.

Around 120 delegates from all areas of the country from Northumbria to Dorset have already signed-up for the conference.

Dr Paul Olver, Herefordshire Council’s Lifelong Learning Development Officer, said: “ Herefordshire is the most rural county in England and has historically received low levels of funding for adult and community education.

“This conference allows us to join with other similar counties to highlight particular rural issues and influence the national agenda so that areas like Herefordshire can begin to grow and develop.”

Conference Keynote speaker, Tina Heathcote, will highlight the need of rural communities to identify their learning needs and what resources are available to enable them to lobby effectively to bring new courses to their local pub or village hall.

The conference will highlight examples of good practice from areas such as Derbyshire, North Yorkshire, South Staffordshire and Norfolk.

In addition, there will be information on how Herefordshire is tackling the rural scene through its own innovative projects and learning programmes.

Places are still available for the conference.

Especially welcome are those involved at the local level in villages and parishes throughout Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire. Please contact Dr Paul Olver on 01432 260192 to book your place.

The Lifelong Learning Conference is funded by the Government’s Department for Education and Skills through the national Educational Centres Association.
