Museum on the Move is a fully accessible museum on a bus able to visit anywhere in the County.
It’s already a firm favourite with at schools, residential homes, Traveller sites and festivals.
The new exhibition, ‘Cultural Roots’, traces the great diversity of cultural influences that have helped to create our modern multi-cultural society.
“This exhibition is a vibrant celebration of the many different cultures from pagan and Christian beliefs mixing in early church artwork to the experiences of Minority Ethnic people living in our county today,” said Sarah Skelton, Community Heritage Officer, the force behind the new exhibition.
“We are particularly excited to have had this opportunity to work with local young people, community groups and the Race Equality Officer.
“Together we have created a display that will challenge the visitors’ preconceptions of Herefordshire’s cultural roots.”
Themes included in the exhibition are immigration and origins, beliefs, language, stereotyping, folklore and traditions as well as, food, costume and music. With plenty of hands-on elements, it’s never dull on the Museum on the Move.
The themes and displays have also been developed with the National Curriculum in mind and links with PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) as well as Citizenship and promoting respect for the differences between people.
The exhibition will be launched in High Town on Monday, 2nd February, 2004, at 11am. The bus will be in High Town from 11am to 5pm so why not come along and learn about our cultural roots?
The exhibition, which has received funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, Museums Libraries and Archives West Midlands and West Mercia Constabulary, will be in the county from 2nd February 2004 through 14th March 2004 and again from 29th June 2004 through 22nd August 2004.
