City Wall relic on display

After the mysterious disappearance of the Civil War cannon ball from its place embedded in a Hereford city wall in July last year, the relic has found a new home on display at the Hereford Museum.

The cannon ball, thought to date from the Siege of Hereford during the Civil War, was cemented into the ancient city wall near Victoria Street in the 1960s during construction of the ring road.

It went missing last summer but was luckily spotted a few days later abandoned near-by by two eagle-eyed parking attendants, and returned to the Herefordshire Council’s conservation section in the Town Hall.

The cannon ball has now found a permanent home at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery and museum staff hope the cannon ball will remain on display for several months.

When not on display, the cannon ball will be carefully stored in the museum’s state-of-the-art storage facility, at Friar Street.

Virginia Mayes-Wright, Collections Officer for Social History, said: “We are delighted to be able to give the canon ball a safe new home.

“It’s particularly gratifying to display an object which many people will recognise and enjoy having a closer look at.”
