During the Christmas break Herefordshire Council received numerous complaints from residents in the Belmont area of Hereford regarding the use of mopeds and motorcycles within our open spaces.
The authority, in trying to prevent this issue from getting out of hand, intends to actively investigate and prosecute any motorcyclist using any open space or local nature reserve where there is a clear bylaw preventing this type of activity.
Fran White, Parks Officer for Hereford City, said: “Herefordshire Council wishes to remind people that it is against the bylaws for anyone to drive an unauthorised motor vehicle on any open space in the County.
‘The use of motorcycles in our parks and open spaces is an accident waiting to happen as not only do these riders cause a hazard to other users of the open space, such as younger children and dog walkers, but many are riding unsafely without wearing helmets and other safety gear,’ she added.
As well as the dangers caused for both the public and the motorcyclists themselves by this antisocial activity, there is also the issue of the nuisance and distress to people living nearby caused by the constant engine "revving".
Cllr John Newman, ward Councillor, added: ‘On a clear day the noise can travel a couple of miles across the city and cause disturbance to people living in the proximity of the open space – this was highlighted on Christmas Day when dozens of residents in the Newton Farm area could not settle down to their Christmas dinner in peace due to the motorcyclists.’
