Calling all Herefordshire artists and craftspeople

Herefordshire is achieving an enviable reputation across the UK for the number of artists and craftspeople working in the county and the high quality of the work that they produce.

Many have achieved national and international status. High profile events have been organised in order for them to show and sell their work.

Now Herefordshire Council has been awarded funding from a number of organisations to support the growth of the creative industries including artists and craftspeople in Herefordshire.

Some of this money is being used to undertake a study to explore the need and direction for capital investment in the arts and in particular design crafts in the county.

The study will assess whether Herefordshire could have its own centre for the creative industries, with studio space for artists to work in, especially for younger artists just starting up, and perhaps a gallery and café to attract the public.

The study will also explore whether artists need capital help to provide better customer access to their own studios or to buy better equipment to help them make their business more professional.

Events such as the Hereford Contemporary Crafts Fair are now established and popular events in Herefordshire.

The recent h.Art art week which took place across the county was a huge success. During h.Art many artists opened their studios to the public and were surprised at how many visitors came to see them at work and how much they enjoyed the experience.

The study needs to establish whether there is a real demand for such ideas and whether capital investment would make a real difference to the artists and craftspeople.

These are the people who know the answers to these questions and the Council is keen to involve them right from the beginning to ensure that whatever is decided will be the right way forward.

Vicki Murray, who has a long history of involvement in the arts in Herefordshire, is doing the work on the study.

She said: “This is an exciting opportunity for artists to have their say on future developments in the county.”

“With all the proposed changes currently being discussed in Herefordshire, this is an ideal time for everyone to be thinking about what we can do to raise the profile of Herefordshire artists and help them to enjoy excellent working environments.”

She would like to hear the views of any artist or craftsperson in the county and will be inviting them to a meeting to discuss the possibilities in Hereford's Courtyard Theatre on Wednesday, February 12.

Anyone with views that would be useful for the study or anyone who would like to attend the meeting, at which franchising and licensing new work will also be explained, please should contact Vicki Murray on (01432) 268455.
