Herefordshire Council Lifelong Learning Development Unit celebrated its learners success with a ceremony held last Friday February 4, at Hereford’s WRVS Riverside Community Learning Centre.

Learners, guests and tutors attended the first of an annually planned ‘Celebration of Learning’ event to recognise the endeavours and achievement of learners on the Council sponsored courses.

Guest of honour was Alan Curless, Chief Executive of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Over ninety learners attended the celebration of which sixty were presented with Open College Network certificates for successful completion of courses ranging from ICT, dressmaking, drama, drawing, horticulture and creative writing.

Alan Curless, Executive Director of the LSC, said: “I congratulate all the learners and reiterate the importance of Learning Partnerships in raising skills levels.

“Partnerships allow the LSC to deliver learning to even the hardest to reach groups.

“Similar collaborative arrangements were crucial last year in the delivery of basic skills training to more than 6,500 across the two counties.”

Special category awards were presented to Katarina Blair for ‘the learner for whom the learning has made most difference’; to Cherry James for ‘the learner who has been most supportive of other learners’; Debbie Stephens for the ‘the learner who has attended against all the odds’; and to Kathleen Uridge who was ‘the learner who had made most progress’.

Cllr Roy Stockton, Cabinet Member (Community and Social Development) said: “The Lifelong Learning Development Unit provides a valuable service for many people in Herefordshire and we are delighted to celebrate their success.

“We hope they will go on to bigger and greater achievements and trust the courses they have been on have boosted their confidence.”
