Share your love of literature

02 February 2005

If you know your Tolkien from your Tolstoy and your Milne from your McEwan, then the “Take My Word” book review competition could be for you.

Herefordshire Council’s library services are holding a book review competition to celebrate World Book Day.

World Book Day, on March 3, has a theme called “Spread the Word”, which encourages people to pass book recommendations to each other.

“A book review competition seemed like the best way to encourage people to share their favourite read with others,” said Brenda Read-Brown, Herefordshire Council’s Reader & Literature Development Officer.

“The competition’s open to people of all ages and covers all books on offer at Herefordshire libraries, from children’s stories and poems to biographies and historical accounts.

“There are so many literary gems out there and this competition is an ideal way to pass on the pleasure that a good book has given you,” she added.

The competition is open to everyone and has six age group categories; the under eights; eight – ten years; 11 – 14 years; 15 – 18 years; 19 – 59 years and the over 60s.

Entrants must write a favourable review of any book they’ve borrowed from, or read, in a Herefordshire public library.

The review should describe why the reader would recommend the book to other readers and detail any information the reader thinks is necessary.

Word limits for the reviews are:

  • Under eight       50 words
  • Eight – ten        100 words
  • 11 – 14             200 words
  • Others               300 words

The closing date for the competition is Monday, February 21. Entries can be posted to Brenda Read, Shire Hall, St Peters Square, Hereford, HR1 2HY; e-mailed, bread-brown@herefordshire.gov.uk; or handed in at your local library.

The entries will be judged by a panel of library staff and a book voucher will be given to the writer of the best review in each class. If you’re one of the lucky winners you’ll receive your prize by March 10.

Once entries are submitted they become the property of Herefordshire Council and by entering the entrant is giving their permission for their review to be copied and published in any outlet thought appropriate.
