Pupils from St Mary’s of Hope Primary School will become lost in a “maze of words” at Hampton Court on Monday, July 7,during Herefordshire Libraries launch of the National Reading Challenge - The Reading Maze - on from 2pm to 3pm.
This is the fifth reading challenge to be held in Herefordshire which last year attracted 1,000 children. During the summer break children all over the UK will be reading, sharing books and visiting their local library to join in the fun.
A brand new life-size maze has been “mowed” into the lawn of the grounds of Hampton Court especially for the summer and the young bookworms will enjoy a variety of maze activities at the launch.
The Reading Maze event is happening in all Herefordshire Libraries, mobile libraries and Hereford Leisure Centre starting on Thursday, July 17.
It is aimed at children under 12 years of age who will read six books, borrowed from their local Herefordshire library, during the summer holidays.
As books are finished, the readers collect prizes of stickers, pencils and a medal. All children who complete the Reading Maze will receive a special certificate.
Sarah Chedgzoy, Herefordshire Council’s Libraries learning & Access Manager, said: “Joining the Reading Maze is a great way to enjoy reading and have fun during the holidays.
“Hampton Court is a magical venue for children and we are delighted the castle agreed to host the launch of the Reading Maze.”
For the first time this summer Hampton Court is holding activities for children.
Activities will run each Friday in August and include archery, birds of prey and teddy bears’ picnic. Details can be found on their website www.hamptoncourt.org.uk.
All library activities will have a maze theme this summer and you can find out more from your local library or by contacting Sarah/Julia 01432 260731.
