WHITECROSS SCHOOL WINS SPECIALIST SPORTS STATUS

Whitecross High School in Hereford has succeeded in its bid to become a specialist Sports College.

The accreditation means the school is eligible for additional funding including £600,000 over four years to purchase specialist sporting equipment.

Denise Strutt, Headteacher, said: “Students, staff, parents and governors are thrilled at this announcement.

“It enables us to work even more closely with our community partners and recognises the excellent work that has been undertaken by the staff and students at the school.

“I would like to thank those staff who were instrumental in putting this bid together and the sponsors who have commitment themselves to supporting us over the next three years.”

Cllr Don Rule, Cabinet Member (Education), said: “I’m delighted for the school and congratulate the Headteacher, staff and particularly sponsors in achieving this success. It is the first specialist sports college in the County.

“As a nation we’ve had a few disappointments of late in the sporting world.

“Come on Whitecross, show them how it’s done!”

The school becomes a specialist Sports College from September and the new status will enable the school to build on its current successful practice of developing young people who are physically, emotionally and educationally healthy.

The concept of “personal best” will be used to drive up standards and develop students who are determined to succeed with whatever academic, sporting or personal goal they set.

The additional funding, worth just over £600 000 over four years, will enable the school to purchase additional equipment including a purpose built trailer to accommodate computerised health and fitness equipment.

A substantial amount of money will also be available to support the community partners identified in the bid including St Mary’s High School, and the Whitecross Pyramid of Schools.

Staff and students are also heavily involved in finalising designs for the new school, which is due to open in April 2006 and will provide superb internal and external sports facilities including five court sports hall, allowing indoor cricket, artificial pitch and other grassed pitches and running track.
