An innovative scheme in Herefordshire is encouraging people to roam further from home by taking a bus to some of the beautiful walking areas in the county.
The Footprints Walking for Health scheme celebrated its second anniversary earlier this month with a walk at the Queenswood Country Park.
Around 15 people, who are also walkers at weekly local health walks joined the celebratory walk and enjoyed a meander through beautiful Queenswood.
Penny Jones, Herefordshire Council’s Walking for Health Co-ordinator, said: “The day was a great success and walkers thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
“I would like to thank Lugg Valley Primrose bus service which was very supportive of the event and also gave a discount on the fare on the day.
“Many local residents have travel cards so Ride and Walk is a cheap and easy alternative to setting off for a walk from home.
“We offered the walkers from our weekly led walks the opportunity to go further afield by public transport, as there are so many beautiful places to explore in the county, including the Country Parks.
Trained volunteer walk leaders led a two-level health walk (half an hour and one hour), followed by a picnic.
Penny added: “We received very positive feedback from our walkers, with the request that we do it again in the Autumn.
“We hope this will motivate people to set off for walks via bus rides and trains to explore parts of Herefordshire for themselves.
“Regular walking improves health and fitness - just 30 minutes five or more days a week can give real benefit.
“Walking can help you feel good, reduce stress, improve heart function, manage your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, help manage diabetes, maintain your mobility and can be sociable, fun and relaxing.”
