They are working up a sweat as they “row” their way across the English Channel but they won’t make a splash!
In the rowing seats, and safely anchored to the Leominster Leisure Centre, are Jon Argent, from halo Leisure, and Bill Healey from the We Want Our Pool (WWOP) campaign.
The marathon rowers are aiming to clock up 22 miles - the narrowest width of the English Channel - on rowing machines and raise funds for the building of the new pool for north Herefordshire.
The pair “launched” on Friday afternoon (July 2) and hope to raise several hundred pounds towards the WWOP’s target of £250,000.
Jon Argent, halo Leisure trust chief executive admitted he hadn’t specifically trained for the “crossing” but was confident they would make the distance over several sessions at the oars.
Jon said: “Neither of us are up to doing the full distance in one hit but we’ll do a few hours at each session and hopefully reach the target distance in the near future.
“It’s all in a good cause and I’m delighted to be able to help the group towards their target.
“halo is a community based organisation and, as we will be managing the new pool on behalf of the Council, I wanted to do my bit to help raise the necessary funds.
Bill Healey, Chairman of the Trustees for We Want our Pool, added: “ I’m exactly the same age as the old Sydonia Pool only that’s demolished and I’ve kept going!”
The WWOP group has so far raised more than half of their target of £250,000.
Herefordshire Council is funding the remainder of the £2.5 million cost of the new facility.
Work on the new pool for north Herefordshire started in April 2004 and is expected to be completed in early autumn of 2005.
The pool is being built adjoining the Leominster Leisure Centre in Conningsby Road, Leominster, and will include a 25m x 12.5m pool with a dedicated 10m x 5m learner bay.
halo Leisure is a trust contracted by Herefordshire Council to operate its leisure facilities and halo will take over the running of the new pool once it’s completed.
