IT'S IN THE BAG!

Herefordshire Council is giving away around 2,500 specially designed green doggy poop bags over the next few weeks to encourage dog owners to do the right thing.

Dog wardens want to see more owners cleaning up little “messages” deposited on street corners and parks by their four-legged friends.

Mike Higgins, Animal Health and Welfare Manager said: “ Unfortunately dogs fouling public pathways and green open spaces cause the most number of complaints to our service.

“What we are hoping to do with this scheme is to encourage those less responsible owners to clear up after their pet pooch.

“Free bags will be on offer from various Council offices throughout the County and owners no longer have any excuses for not doing the right thing.

“A poop scoop bag is a clean, quick and easy way to pick up your dogs mess and domestic waste bins can be used to dispose of the bags. “

In addition to the big bag giveaway, a Herefordshire Council Dog Warden will be on hand during the week to answer questions related to responsible dog ownership as well as promoting the Councils ‘Dog Watch’ campaign.

One of the Council Dog Wardens; Dave Goulding, Matt Faulds or Carl Phillipson, will be at Ledbury Market Square 10-11am and Newton Farm Community Association Office 11-12 noon on Wednesday (July 21); Ross Info Shop 10-11am, Thursday (July 22), and the Leominster Info Shop on Friday (July 23) 10-11am.

The poop scoop bags are available in packs of five from:
Kington payment office
Leominster Info Shop
Leominster Library
Bromyard Info Shop
Ledbury Council offices
Ross Info Shop
Ross Library
Hereford Town Hall Reception
Hereford Library
Belmont Library

Councillor Phil Edwards, Cabinet Member (Environment) in welcoming this initiative said: “Whilst the costs involved in providing bins together with the associated cleaning and emptying service, in every part of the County, are prohibitive, this is one of the ways that the Council can help to encourage dog owners to keep our footpaths and grassy play areas clean.”

It is intended to support this campaign with increased patrols in some of the more problematic areas and when necessary taking appropriate action against offenders.
