GAS MAIN WORKS PAVE WAY FOR CAR FREE SHOPPING

Transco’s improvement works will be pulling out of High Town and moving into Widemarsh Street from 12 July.

This is one of the biggest phases of the work to replace the old gas main and will involve a road closure from JDs pub on Widemarsh Street to Boots on High Street.

The road closure is in place for nine weeks but Transco is hoping that the work will be done in a much shorter time.

Herefordshire Council and Transco have been working hard to ensure that minimum disruption is caused to retailers and bus and taxi services. In the meantime people will be able to enjoy car free shopping in the normally busy Widemarsh Street.

The bus stop in Widemarsh Street will be out of use during the works. All country bus services that normally use this stop will pick up at Maylord Orchards and Bridge Street, also missing out the Broad Street stop.

Service 74 to Newton Farm will pick up at Maylord Orchards, the City Bus Station and then round to Broad Street as usual.

Herefordshire Council will also be enforcing traffic regulations at the bus stops and taxi ranks to ensure that the areas are kept clear of any other traffic and only used by the services and people who need to use them.

Transco has consulted all retailers who will be affected by the road closure and are looking at various options to ensure deliveries continue with as little disruption as possible.

“The Transco works are going to plan and we’re pleased that, so far, it’s been very much business as usual in High Town,” said Stephen Oates, Herefordshire Council’s Head of Highways and Transportation.

“Once the work in High Town is completed we’ll send in Herefordshire Jarvis Services to give the whole area a thorough clean up.

“Transco and Herefordshire Council have been working hard to make sure that this next phase of work causes minimum disruption and ensure that Hereford remains an attractive place to shop,” he added.
