A major new education campaign, launched by the Home Office last week, aims to be “frank” with young people in raising awareness of the dangers of hard drug use.
Called FRANK, the initiative focuses on Class-A drugs such as heroin, cocaine and ecstasy and aims to help parents educate themselves and talk “frankly” with their children about drug use.
FRANK is also re-launching the National Drug Helpline 0800 77 66 00 and a new website www.talktofrank.com
To coincide with the launch locally, Herefordshire’s Drug Action Team (DAT) will be distributing information around the county advertising FRANK plus local services and initiatives.
The Drug Action Team, whilst supporting the focus on Class-A drugs, will also be campaigning to make sure young people have accurate information on all harmful substances including cannabis.
The Team will also be targeting alcohol misuse by young people – a concern throughout the county – and raising awareness of the dangers of “drug driving”.
Later this year a new specialist Young People’s Substance Misuse Team is also being launched.
The team of three professionals is jointly funded by the Youth Offending Team, the Drug Action Team and Connexions. They will work with a small number of problematic drug users and coach staff already working with young people to offer help and guidance around substance misuse issues.
The team will train groups of staff to be more confident about talking to young people about substance misuse.
