ROSS ROAD CLOSURE DELAYED

The five-week closure of Greytree Road in Ross-on-Wye town centre - due to start at the end of June - has been delayed.

The planned closure, to allow the replacement of the old brick-built culvert which runs from the Fiveways junction, has been delayed because the company responsible for producing the 35 seven and a half tonne concrete sections which will form the new culvert cannot deliver them in time.

As a result the road will not be closed until late summer – after the Ross International Festival, which takes place in August.

Preparatory work for the diversion of the brook and a detailed investigation of the cables and pipes in the road started on Tuesday last week, June 1.

However Herefordshire Council has since been told the delivery of the culvert units by the supplier has been delayed. As a result the Council could not guarantee that the road closure would be lifted by the start of the Ross International Festival and so the decision to delay the closure until late Summer was taken.

“This is very annoying for all concerned, but we cannot take any risks with disrupting traffic coming in for the Festival which is so important to the town,” said Stewart Barton, Herefordshire Council Contracts Manager who is overseeing the project.

“We are urgently revising the works programme to ensure safe completion during the remainder of the Summer.”

“A successful meeting for local residents was held on Wednesday last week and everyone was very helpful and positive. They will all be kept informed of further news.”

The main works will not now start until the Monday after the Festival, and the road closure is planned for 6 September.

Anyone with any questions about the works can contact Stewart on (01432) 260784.
