HEREFORD TOWN HALL DISPLAY

To mark the centenary of the opening of Hereford’s Town Hall on June 9,1904, a display is on in the reception area of the Herefordshire Record Office until July 3.

The display, in Hereford’s Harold Street office, opened on Monday, June 7.

It features a number of fascinating items from the archives, including maps, photographs, ceremonial records and census returns.

It focuses on the role played by two of the four daughters of Richard Johnson - who was Town Clerk from 1832 to 1868.

The family, following the demolition of the old Town Hall in High Town, kindly donated the family home at 136 St Owen Street to provide a site for new premises.

Rhys Griffith, Herefordshire Council’s Senior Archivist, said: “Our display will offer a glimpse of the transformation of central Hereford from a residential to a business district.

“It’s also a tribute to a spirit of municipal pride and generosity.”

For details of opening hours and how to get to Herefordshire Record Office visit www.herefordshire.gov.uk/archives.

For further information about the display please contact Rhys Griffith, Senior Archivist, on 01432 260750.
