Vehicle Checks on Edgar Street

More than one in ten vehicles stopped during a city centre blitz on cars and lorries last week were found to be defective. More than one in ten vehicles stopped during a city centre blitz on cars and lorries last week were found to be defective.

Out of 81 vehicles stopped in the joint exercise between Herefordshire Council’s Environmental Health & Trading Standards Service, the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency and the Police, 12 were defective in some way and one HGV driver was apprehended for not possessing a Vehicle Operators Licence.

Cars, vans, taxis and HGVs were pulled over in the exercise carried out along Edgar Street.

The analysis was:

· Four cars served with prohibition notices for defective or worn tyres
· Three vans served with prohibition notices for defective or worn tyres
· Two cars served with prohibition notices for defective lights
· Three light goods vehicles served with prohibition notices for mechanical defects
· One HGV driver apprehended for not possessing a Vehicle Operators licence
· One vehicle failed on exhaust emissions

Cllr Phil Edwards, Cabinet Member (Environment) said: "Part of Hereford has been designated as an Air Quality Management Area to help protect the householders and properties adjacent to the A49 corridor from high levels of pollution.

"We’re pleased that a major reduction of vehicles with failing exhaust emissions was recorded this time; these checks will help ensure that the vehicles driving in this area are running as cleanly as possible."

In relation to road safety, Cllr Mike Wilson, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation), said: "As well as the obvious benefits of this exercise to air quality, Herefordshire Council has a role to play in promoting road safety and we will therefore continue to support the work of the Police and Vehicle & Operator Services Agency in this very important area of their work.

"At this time of year when the road conditions are wet and slippery with poor visibility, we rely on the safety of our vehicles more than ever and we must therefore all remember to check our tyres and lights more frequently.

"It’s our own responsibility to ensure our cars and vehicles are safe and legal at all times, not just for our own benefit, but also for the safety of all the other road users and pedestrians," he added.

The statistics show a significant improvement in vehicle emissions compared to previous years, although the percentage of road safety defects on vehicles has slightly increased.

Random spot checks on vehicles, including cars, vans, taxis, HGVs and buses will be repeated to ensure that the air quality trend is maintained and to help reduce the number of vehicles driving with worn tyres or defective lights.
