THE YOU@HOME INITIATIVE

An initiative to provide housing repairs services for vulnerable people in Herefordshire is being launched on Tuesday, May 4, at the Three Counties Hotel in Hereford.

Called You@Home, the initiative is an exciting joint venture between the Herefordshire Council’s Social Care and Strategic Housing Directorate and Anchor Trust.

The service will provide essential and/or urgent home repairs, up to the value of £1000, to vulnerable people, defined as ‘those needing support to live independently, regardless of age’

Herefordshire Council, health and key organisations such as the Fire Authority and voluntary organisations will be responsible for identifying people in need and referring them to the You@Home team.

Sue Fiennes, Herefordshire Council’s Director of Social care and Strategic Housing, said: “The You@Home initiative is a wonderful example of the Council working in partnership to promote independent living.

“By involving such a wide range of volunteer and other providers, we will ensure as many vulnerable people as possible are assisted.

“The project will greatly contribute to achieving improved prospects for older and vulnerable people to remain living as independently as possible."

Works to be carried out under the scheme include:

· Safety and security improvements
· Insulation and heating improvements
· Essential repairs
· Fast track minor adaptations
· Minor alterations to enable people to more easily return home after a stay in hospital.

The service will be delivered by the You@Home team, based at the Anchor Staying Put office in Whitecross Road, Hereford.

The team consists of two technicians and a co-ordinator who will receive and process all referrals and enquiries.

The launch on Tuesday is from 1 to 3pm and will be attended by representatives from partner organisations, who it is hoped, will be key to identifying potential users of the service.

There will be a chance to meet team members and find out how the scheme will work.
