Working in partnership for the people of Herefordshire

Standards Committee

Herefordshire Council, along with all other local authorities in England and Wales, has established a Standards Committee to ensure a high standard of conduct by Councillors.

This watchdog committee aims to ensure that local councillors - whether at County, Town or Parish level - observe the National Code of Conduct, which means they must act with probity, integrity and honesty.

The Standards Committee - which is a legal requirement under the Local Government Act 2000 - also deals with complaints against Councillors, advises on the adoption and revision of the Code of Conduct, monitors how the Code operates and arranges training for Councillors.

The Standards Committee currently consists of two Herefordshire Councillors, one Parish Council representative and one independent person.

The Council now wishes to appoint a second independent member.

“We’re looking for a person who is familiar with ethical dilemmas, has experience of committee work and is independent of any political party and local government,” said Mr Robert Rogers, the current independent member who is also Chairman of the Committee.

“Local decision making has to be made for the good of local communities and not influenced by personal preferences or vested interests, and the independent element is an important part of the constitution of Standards Committees nationwide.

“This committee keeps a watchful eye on the behaviour and conduct of Herefordshire Councils at all levels. I’m pleased to say that the standard of integrity among Herefordshire’s Councillors is extremely high.”

The independent member must not be, or have been in the last five years, a Councillor or an employee with Herefordshire Council, and must not be a relative or close friend of either an employee or Councillor.
