The first annual “Car Free Day” in Hereford has been hailed as a resounding success. Motorists to the city of Hereford were encouraged to leave their vehicles at home for a day with an assortment of activities to promote environmentally friendly travel on Monday September 22, 2003.
The event, coordinated by Herefordshire Councils Green Transport Project was part of the Europe-wide ‘In Town Without My Car Day’ Initiative also on 22 September.
Visitors to High Town were treated to a Travel Fair featuring stalls such as First Group, the Workmatch ‘Spokes’ project, Peter Briggs Shoes and Phil Prothero Cycles, as well as several Herefordshire Council departments including, Public Transport, Rights of Way, Road Safety and Transportation. Shooting Stars Circus Skills provided entertainment.
One of the main features of Car Free Day was offered by First Bus Service which promoted unlimited citywide travel within Hereford for only £1 all day.
Shaun Simpson, Marketing Manager for First, said: “First was delighted to participate in Car Free Day by offering unlimited travel within Hereford City for just £1. Our goal was to encourage people who haven’t been on a bus for years to give us a try.”
