The Waste Management Section and Parks and Countryside Section has recently been working in Partnership with 'The Noise' - a local young people action group who staged a three day event over the August Bank Holiday in the South Wye Area of Hereford designed to proactively care for their community working alongside the fire brigade and local police to positively affect anti-social behaviour, reduce crime and bring a fresh sense of hope to the neighbourhood.
Over 200 youngsters were involved in projects such as Painting, Gardening and Weeding across Hinton, Redhill, Newton Farm and Hunderton with Waste Management supplying quantities of black bags, gloves and litterpickers. As well as removing all rubbish collected, a roadsweeper was also sent to help proceedings along. A whole host of promotional items designed to encourage and reward those involved were supplied through the Waste Management network of contacts including ENCAMS and McDonalds, e.g. badges, hats, t-shirts, pens and keyrings as well as complimentary drink and meal vouchers. Over 4 skips of rubbish was collected and Sue Carter - event organiser said:
"It was a great success with local residents responding too and another event is already being planned for next year!".
Such self ownership of areas is something Herefordshire Council is trying to actively promote in conjunction with litter awareness campaigns.
