Teachers and educators across the county are due to get together on Tuesday next week, September 17, for the launch of a new colour brochure outlining the learning opportunities for schools provided by Herefordshire Attractions, County Museums, Herefordshire Records Office and Libraries.
The brochure, called Breathing Life into Learning, has been produced by Herefordshire Tourism and has been funded by Advantage West Midlands and Herefordshire Council.
It’s the first of its kind to list educational opportunities for schools in the local area.
Attractions listed in the brochure include Monkland Cheese Dairy, The Amazing Hedge Puzzle at Symonds Yat and Shortwood Family Farm.
County museums, are represented as well including the The Waterworks Museum, the Conningsby Museum and The Cider Museum and King Offa Distillery.
Whilst educational visits to these attractions will breath life into many aspects of the primary curriculum, Hereford Museum, Herefordshire Records office and the Schools Library Service all run services which allow resources out into the schools themselves.
Sessions they run include, Digging up the Romans, Crime, Wills and Quills, and Religious Artefact Handling boxes to name only a few.
The brochure also includes details about Heritage Services' Museum on the Move, which is a complete museum in a bus that visits schools and can be linked to History, Science and Geography. The current exhibition is called “No Time to Waste” and is all about rubbish.
Siriol Collins, Heritage Learning Officer, said: “It’s notoriously difficult to make contact with teachers as they are always so busy. This eye-catching colour brochure will hopefully grab their attention in the staff room and open up new worlds of opportunity - worlds that are on their doorstep if they only knew where to look!”
All primary schools in the county will receive a copy of the brochure, but anyone wanting their own personal copy should contact Bridgette Kempson on bkempson@Herefordshire.gov.uk or telephone her on (01568) 797842.
