Mission Impossible Waste Challenge

Special ‘Agents’ from Herefordshire Council will be out and about from Monday, 15 September, in an attempt to encourage householders to take part in the ‘Mission Impossible’ Waste Challenge initiative.

Waste Challenge is about both reducing the amount of waste generated, and that put out for collection/disposal. ‘Mission Impossible’ is about retention – keeping that ‘green’ part of waste (mainly garden and kitchen) at home and dealing with it there.

Two trial areas have been identified in Herefordshire, to see what approach works best in encouraging people to home compost etc.

There is one rural and one urban area, and each area will have three monitored exercises that will all run at the same time. The first exercise is to send out canvassers to call on households to briefly discuss the issues and then offer some very special ‘deals’ on home composters, ‘green cones’ and wormeries.

The second exercise just involves delivering the special offers through the letterbox, and the third a control where households receive no information at all. The amount of waste collected from households involved with each exercise will be monitored over a period of time.

Andrew Tector, Head of Environmental Health and Trading Standards, said: “This project is unique and offers the opportunity to not only reduce waste put out for collection/disposal, but also to identify which interventions work best in encouraging people to change their behaviour. The results will be extremely interesting.”

Cllr Phil Edwards, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: ”We are piloting this project in Herefordshire as it is imperative we try to reverse the 3% annual growth in waste that is happening all over the country.

“This is not only important from an environmental point of view, but also waste disposal contributes to a sizeable proportion of the Council’s expenditure. The cost is too great on both counts.”

Canvassers will be calling in the Tupsley/Hampton Dene area, and in Wellington/Moreton on Lugg and part of Sutton St Nicholas. They will be readily identified by their ‘Mission Impossible’ sweatshirts and all canvassers will be wearing Herefordshire Council identity badges. There is no need for any canvasser to enter anyone’s home.
