After £250,000 of improvements, a bridge in Bromyard is set to be named in a ceremony on Friday, September 5, at 12.30pm.
The bridge is to be called “The Bill Morris Bridge”, after a local resident, by Herefordshire Council Leader Roger Phillips who will unveil a plaque to commemorate the event.
Also at the opening will be the sons of the late Bill Morris - David and Clifford Morris together with other family and friends.
A structural assessment in 2002 found the bridge, which takes the B4203 out to Great Witley, was unsound and that the deck needed replacing.
The bridge was closed on July 7, 2003, for the installation of the new steel deck, improvement to the road alignment and traffic sight lines and widening the footpath. The bridge re-opened to traffic on 29 August as programmed.
The weight restriction that had been in force since Autumn last year has now been removed from the bridge.
The bridge was constructed in 1897 for the completion of the Worcester, Bromyard and Leominster railway.
Cllr Mike Wilson, Cabinet Member Highways and Transportation, said: “ The bridge is a vital link for Bromyard’s local industries and has now been fully restored to its former glory.
“As well as improving the structure of the bridge, the works have tried to restore original characteristics of the bridge by re-using its original stone work and painting the steelwork in the colours of the original bridge - the official colours of the Worcester, Bromyard and Leominster Railway.”
Cllr Roger Phillips, Leader of the Council, said: “It’s a splendid idea to name the Bridge after a local resident.
“Congratulations must go to all the Herefordshire Council staff and contractors who worked to a very tight deadline and to ensure the bridge was reopened in time for the forthcoming folk festival.”
