SIGNING WITH YOUR BABY!

Sure Start, a government funded organisation working with children under four and their families, are starting a new group to show parents and carers new ways of communicating with their children.

Babies can understand words a lot earlier than their speech muscles are ready to say them and to bridge this gap they will often start to use their own little gestures to communicate, e.g. lifting their arms up when they are ready to come out of their high chair.

These few ‘home made’ gestures make a world of difference for their independence.

Having a way of communicating may also mean they get less frustrated and it is certainly an exciting way for carers to get an idea of what is going on in their head.

Many people also report that their children then go on to use words earlier and that it has boosted the size of their early vocabulary.

The sessions will run on Tuesday mornings in November at the Kington Sure Start Shop.
