History to come alive in Hereford's High Town

27 July 2010

Shoppers in Hereford will be whisked back in time on Saturday, July 31, when Herefordshire Council holds its inaugural "Historical Hereford Day," in High Town.

It will be a celebration of ages past, with live re-enactments to thrill visitors to the city centre with authentic displays of cookery, combat, drama and musical performances running from 10am to 5pm.

There will also be opportunities to get "hands on" by grinding corn, rolling a candle and making lavender bags.

Traders from the retail market in Commercial Street, the Farmers Market and the Buttermarket have been invited to join in the fun and dress in costume, as well as the High Town street traders, to ensure shoppers will be transported back in time wherever they look.

The Cathedral will have an information stall in High Town on the day, as will Herefordshire Council's heritage services team which will run a number of themed workshops, including one on calligraphy.

Visitors to the city centre are being urged to look out for the infamous "Barber Surgeon" who will be creating his own style of treatments in High Town and at the Old House!

"This will be a fantastic event which will bring a real vibrancy to the area on this day," said Cllr Adrian Blackshaw, cabinet member for economic development and community service.

"There will be a wide range of attractions for all ages, celebrating Hereford's unique medieval history.

"We expect the area to be a bustling mixture of market stalls, coupled with live demonstrations and performances, making Hereford city centre the place to be," added Cllr Blackshaw.
