Working in partnership for the people of Herefordshire

Get a healthy lifestyle – we show you how

23 July 2010

A scheme that has helped hundreds of young people improve their health and wellbeing will be spreading the message at Hinton Community Centre on Wednesday, August 4.

The Living Well Hereford Activity Day will take place from 10am and will have lots of free activities including an outdoor climbing wall for everyone to come along and try out.

More than 300 young people in the county have already made improvements to their physical and mental wellbeing as a result of becoming involved in the Living Well Herefordshire project, which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and managed by NHS Herefordshire.

The event will run from 10am right through until 4pm and there will be plenty of activities to keep the children - and even the adults - entertained including a climbing wall, the chance to try out WiiFit and a dance mat, craft workshops as well as sports and games.

The theme of the day will be health and wellbeing and visitors to the day will have the chance to get help and advice on healthy eating, exercise and keeping fit as well as mental health issues. The real emphasis, however, is about family participation and enjoyment.

The event will be run by Herefordshire Voluntary Action and Wye Woods, supported by the county's public health team. There will also be the opportunity for visitors to meet representatives from local police, fire service, youth and community services.

Living Well Herefordshire is one of the 29 projects in the Living Well West Midlands portfolio managed by the West Midlands Councils.

The project offers targeted support to children and families around healthy eating, exercise and mental wellbeing in South Wye and Leominster, and these activity days will offer the opportunity for important health messages to go out to a wider audience within the community.

Clare Wichbold, grants and partnership officer at NHS Herefordshire, said: "We're in the final year of the programme and we have the opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved so far."

"We have received some additional funding from the Living Well West Midlands portfolio for the project to run extra activities for the wider community and so we are delighted to be able to run this event. We hope lots of local families come along and have some fun but that they also take away the message about healthy living."
