HEREFORD CITY SHOP FRONT GRANT SCHEME

Shop fronts of yesteryear are set to make a comeback in Hereford City Centre thanks to a grant scheme which has just been announced.

Herefordshire Council’s new Shop Front Grant Scheme aims to enhance the physical appearance of the shops in the City Centre to create a more pleasant environment for shoppers.

It means owners or traders leasing shops that are independent retail and commercial premises can apply for a grant to a maximum of £7,000 or 75% of the total project cost, whichever is the lesser.

The scheme excludes banks, building societies, multiples and private residencies and the area covered by the scheme is within the City Walls and includes St Martin’s Street and Commercial Road.

“I’m delighted that the Council can offer these grants to local shopkeepers,” said Cllr George Hyde, Cabinet Member (Economic Development, Markets and Property).

“We’ve all seen examples of shop fronts which look totally out of place – this scheme offers shopkeepers the opportunity to replace modern shop fronts, along with signage, with something more appropriate to the ages and style of the building and the character of the city centre.

“We can also help them restore, repair or paint an existing acceptable shop front,” added Cllr Hyde.

The grants are also available to help with the reinstatement of historical, original or traditional architectural features and the fitting of security equipment (excluding CCTV).

The scheme runs for three years until March 2007.

Any city-centre traders wanting to take advantage of the grant scheme should contact the Delegated Grants Team on (01432) 260753 or email the team at: delegatedgrants@herefordshire.gov.uk.
