The Ledbury Greenspace Liaison Group is one of the lucky community groups to benefit from part of a £30 million Government grant scheme to help local people improve their environment.
Funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister ‘Living Spaces’ provides funds and support to help people make the most of open spaces in their neighbourhood.
The scheme is enabling community groups across England to improve and create a whole range of spaces from play areas, community gardens, local parks and city farms to ponds, kick-about areas, squares and village greens.
The Ledbury Greenspace Liaison Group has been awarded a grant of £12,000 to make improvements to the Riverside Park and raise awareness of the town’s recreational greenspaces.
The project aims to link together the three different sections of Herefordshire Council managed parkland alongside the bypass between Leadon Valley Picnic Site and the land adjoining the Hereford Road, which is divided up by Little Marcle Road.
A new map has been designed to link the three as the ‘Riverside Park’ and improved signage in the form of fingerposts will help to guide people around the site to a safe crossing point on Little Marcle Road.
Interpretation boards, which will include the new map, will give details of interesting aspects of the park and a feature will be made of the Weir.
Tree work has already been undertaken to open up the riverside by the Weir and new recycled plastic tables will be installed to encourage people to relax and enjoy the view. New benches will also be installed around the park.
Meanwhile, parking spaces for users of the park have already been specially allocated at the new Homebase DIY store and there are plans for drop kerbs to be installed to help people to cross the Leadon Way safely.
Living Spaces will also fund new map boards and waymarkers to be positioned on the Ledbury Town Trail, with the aim of increasing awareness of the links between the town centre and the surrounding countryside.
Also at Dog Hill Wood owned by Ledbury Town Council, an interpretation board will be installed to point out the interesting features at one of Ledbury’s most popular recreational amenities.
The project has been developed by the Ledbury Greenspace Liaison Group - local people who meet regularly to discuss issues relating to Ledbury’s parks and open spaces.
Councillor Martin Eager, Chairman of the Ledbury Greenspace Liaison Group said “We are very pleased to have been awarded this grant to make some key improvements to Ledbury’s Greenspaces for both local people and visitors to the town.
More follows…
“If you would like to be involved in similar projects in the future or would like more information on how you can get involved with the Ledbury Greenspace Liaison Group please contact Colin Meneaud, Parks Manager on, 01568 798344,” he added.
It is hoped that all the work will be completed by early 2005.
The Herefordshire Council Parks, Countryside and Leisure Development also has plans to renovate the car park at Leadon Valley Picnic Site to allow for a larger number of parking spaces at the often busy site.
