MINISTER TO OFFICIALLY OPEN LEOMINSTER'S ACCESS ROAD

Almost a year to the day after work first began, Leominster’s new access road is to be officially declared open.

In the middle of September last year workmen moved onto the site on the western edge of the town to start construction of the new access road.

Now, a year later, Tony McNulty MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Dept of Transport, is to officially declare the road open this Thursday, September 9.

“We’re absolutely delighted that the new road has now been declared open,” said Cllr Roger Phillips, Leader of Herefordshire Council.

“It marks a significant commitment and investment from the Council, along with the other funders – Advantage West Midlands, the European Regional Development Objective 2 Programme and Leominster Single Regeneration Budget,” he added.

The new link-road will now be able to play a vital role in opening up the new 30-acres, £20 million enterprise park, on the edge of Leominster with both the A49 by-pass and the A44, which is expected to create around 600 jobs.

The Leominster Enterprise Park is a project which has been developed by the regional development agency Advantage West Midlands with assistance from Herefordshire Council.

It will be built in a number of phases and will become home to light industrial and commercial units.

“The new business park will provide business accommodation which is needed in the north of the County,” said Cllr Mike Wilson, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation).

“The new road will provide upgraded access to Leominster with a new roundabout and modern bridge. The old route has also been modified to provide dedicated pedestrian and cycle access across the rail line and A49.

“We expect many varied companies to make the new site their home. What they all will have in common is the need for an efficient way to ship in raw material and a quick distribution system for transporting out finished goods.

“This new road provides just that. The transportation staff and the contractors (Babtie Group and Mowlem) are to be congratulated on a well managed project”

Cllr George Hyde, Cabinet Member (Economic Development, Markets and Property) added: “Leominster’s new industrial estate will be a shot in the arm to the business economy in the north of Herefordshire.

“This road is an essential piece of the jigsaw and ensures we have an efficient transport infrastructure to give them quick and easy access onto our main arterial routes and this new road provides just that.”

“This new access road is key to unlocking the success of the new business park and I’m delighted it’s now been completed.”

Mark Pearce, Advantage West Midlands Director for Herefordshire, said: “Now the road is officially open we expect the considerable demand shown in units on the new industrial estate to rise even further.

“It’s excellent to see the work complete and the money well spent, now we can put all of our efforts into getting the companies onto the site which until the road was open we’ve not been able to do.

“There’s no doubt the new business park will make a huge difference to the economy of Leominster.”
