Herefordshire Council is re-issuing 84,000 council tax bills this week as a result of Central Government’s decision to cap the expenditure of the Council and the Hereford and Worcester Combined Fire Authority.
“The Council lobbied Government hard, but ultimately unsuccessfully, to try and avoid the need to re-issue bills,”
said Ian Hyson, County Treasurer.
The reduction for a band D property is only £7.53 (Council £3.80, Fire £3.73) for the full year and council taxpayers will only see a small reduction in their monthly instalments.
For those in receipt of council tax benefit, the Council is required to send out a revised bill and benefit letter.
However, in the majority of cases the reduction in the council tax will be offset by an equal amount of benefit, which means that the amount individuals have to pay will remain the same.
As the reduction is only a relatively small amount, the Council is looking to save council taxpayers’ money by carrying forward any credits on accounts to be offset against next year’s figure. The cost involved in issuing a cheque would be more than the refund.
