Tread softly along the way-marked Badger Trail, look carefully, and you will discover artists at work among the trees – in wood, paint, fabric, willow and paper.
There are myriad ways to respond to the beauty and spirit of the woodland, and we invite you to come and join in one of our collaborative projects, talk with the artists, or simply watch and enjoy the moment.
Art in the woods is part of h.Art Herefordshire Art Week, 2004 and is taking place at Queenswood Country Park, Wednesday 15 – Sunday 19 September, 1-5pm daily.
More than fifty Herefordshire artists are taking part, with something different happening each day.
Participating artists include Richard Bavin, Emily Garnham Wright, Rachel Hannah, Peter Horrocks, Jeanette Miles, Allison Neal, Victoria Reynolds, Jenni Stuart-Anderson, Jane Tudge and Peter Williams.
Also featuring Artjam, Manic Ceramics, Art & The Spirit and performing artists including About Face, John Burns, Quentin Shaw & Heather McQueen, Julie Long and Peter Williams.
A daily programme will be listed on the whiteboard by the Information Centre on site, and we will go ahead in all weathers except heavy and persistent rain.
Art in the Woods was conceived and organised on a voluntary basis by
Richard Bavin, a landscape artist based in Wellington village: “I often walk through these beautiful woods all year round as a source of inspiration and renewal.
“I would like to see far more people engage with the visual arts, and this seemed the perfect place to set up an event which everyone could enjoy in some way,” he added.
Eight collaborative art projects, each with a lead artist, have been designed so that visitors can join in. Some of these involve paint, charcoal, glue and other wonderfully messy substances. We need to say that you participate at your own risk, and that children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
The collaborative projects are:
Woodland Kaleidoscope – lead artist Richard Bavin: Working on a large scale with acrylic paints and household brushes to try and capture the kaleidoscope of colours as the woodland light changes through the day.
Puck – lead artist Jane Tudge: Constructing and decorating an 8 foot papier-mâché figure of Puck from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
More follows…
Making Your Mark - from the woodland, about the woodland - lead artist Peter Horrocks: Making use of the natural resources of the woodland to make marks and develop a large scale drawing, or series of drawings, to record the sense of the place.
Anybody’s Bender – lead artist Jenni Stuart-Anderson: “We will cut 15 hazel poles in the wood and make a bender in the Autumn Garden. We will cover it with cloth and decorate it starting on September 15. You can crawl inside a bender. We hope people will join in.”
Forest Felt – led by Artjam: “Making felt in woodland colours, and using this to create natural shapes. We aim to use these to make one large installation during the week.”
September - lead artist Emily Garnham Wright: Creating a sculpture made up of twisted fibres and inviting visitors to join in. The sculpture will be influenced by its location, positioning and the changing season.
Leave a Leaf on the Poet-Tree - lead artist Rachel Hannah: “Here in the wood, words can really breathe; they can swing from the trees and flutter enticingly in the breeze… So when I heard John Hegley sing “I want to be a leaf on the poet-tree!”, I wanted to be one, too. How about you?”
Willow Dog - lead artist Jeanette Miles: At Queenswood Jeanette will be making a sculpture of a large dog using locally sourced live willow.
Queenswood is Herefordshire’s only country park and has free car parking, toilets and baby changing facilities as well as a licensed café (opening hours vary please call 01568 797880 to confirm it will be open when you visit.)
Following improvements undertaken last year there is also a new adventure play area and a free ‘seaside style’ telescope at the view-point to help see more of the view.
There are three way-marked trails and easy access paths so that everyone can enjoy the park and an electric mobility vehicle is available to hire from the Tourist Information Centre Tel: 01568 797842.
Queenswood Country Park is on the A49 between Hereford and Leominster – follow the brown signs at the top of Dinmore Hill. Alternatively the 492 bus service departs Hereford and Leominster at regular intervals throughout the day.
