The Chief Executive of Herefordshire Council and the authority’s Cabinet Member for Rural Regeneration and Smallholdings got a water-borne tourists’ eye view of Hereford.
Neil Pringle and Cllr Charles Mayson spent an evening paddling down the River Wye courtesy of a local canoe company which caters for holidaymakers to Herefordshire who fancy a spot of messing about on the water.
Peter Daines’ invitation to the intrepid duo came about to highlight the lack of access to the river for canoeists in Hereford and also the amount of litter dropped along the riverbanks.
“If you’re a canoeist and you want to get off the water, you do so at Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye or Hay-on-Wye where there’s good river access,”
said Mr Daines, who runs the Lucksall Caravan site Canoe Hire service.
“This is a real pity as Hereford has a lot to offer holidaymakers canoeing on the River Wye,” he added.
He said he often has to help parties of canoeists scramble down the river bank in the shadow of Hereford Cathedral avoiding shopping trolleys, broken glass, cans and general litter.
“This is a real shame as more and more people are discovering the joys of canoeing,” he said.
Cllr Charles Mayson said it was a pity one of jewels in the county’s crown was being spoilt by careless litterlouts.
“This not only puts people off visiting the county, it also costs the authority money as the clean-up has to be paid for,” he added.
“We all have a responsibility to make sure our environments are clean and tidy. While the Council plays a major role in handling refuse, taking away rubbish and cleaning up litter, it can’t do this in isolation and needs the help of the residents of the county.”
Both Cllr Mayson and Mr Pringle enjoyed their leisurely paddle down the River Wye – although they admitted to being a bit “soggy round the gills” by the time they got their feet back on dry land eight miles down stream from Hereford Cathedral.
